Abigail Sherwood House (c.1774)1   85 Carpenter Avenue.

The oldest house in Crestwood, it is located at 85 Carpenter Avenue. The front portion of this house is the original Abigail Sherwood farmhouse built in 1774. It then was centered near the corner of Scarsdale Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. To preserve this important Crestwood landmark , it was moved to its present site in 1917 by the Merritt Family who were related by marriage to the Sherwoods.

The remaining portion of this house was built around 1890.The Sherwood House was the meeting place of the Methodist Society when Francis Asbury returned to Westchester County after the American Revolution. It was Abigail Sherwood who became the proud possessor of the 125 acres of land (under the Bill of Forfeiture,1785) which form the basic part of old Crestwood. It is possible Abigail may even have witnessed Yonkers’ first battle in the Revolution right from her front parlor window. This feisty lady, fondly known as "The Widow Sherwood" is still with us and rests in peace in the Asbury Church graveyard.

Architecturally it has gone through many changes, but much detailing still remains of this original Colonial structure.
