Underhill-Reynolds House
(1811)1 582 Scarsdale
Road
This charming house still stands tucked
way up a private lane almost out of site at 582 Scarsdale Road. Once
part of the Cartright acquisition after the Revolution in 1785 and
adjacent to the Abigail Sherwood tract, it was bought shortly
thereafter by James Underhill whose daughter, Sarah, married
Nathaniel Reynolds.
The center portion was built in 1811 and
the left side was built in 1826/27 in an early
Neo-Classical architectural style. Unlike the larger Italianate
Reynolds mansion which faced Scarsdale Road (and was torn down in
the 1920s), 582 faces south (toward the now extinct mansion) and is
believed to have been the original farmhouse (or "home farm" as it
would have been called in England).
Subsequent to James Underhill, the house
was owned by Jesse Reynolds, his grandson. It was later purchased by
Robert Horsley, well known Crestwood Realtor and Councilman of his
time.
The present owners are lovingly restoring
the exterior and lower floor rooms that remain somewhat
intact.
