Asbury Methodist Church of Crestwood - 167 Scarsdale Road

The Asbury Church, one of the oldest in this Country, was named for Francis Asbury, the pioneering Methodist Minister who came to America (and what is now Crestwood) in 1771. Two years later, under his guidance, a local Methodist Society was formed...  In 1797 the Sherwood Chapel was built on the land of Moses and Tamer Sherwood.  In 1835 the Church was incorporated as the First Methodist Church of the Town of Yonkers. This name remained until 1942 when official action was taken to change the name to Asbury Methodist Church of Crestwood, New York. The present structure was dedicated February 20, 1867, on the 100th anniversary of Methodism in America. It was built using marble from the quarries in Tuckahoe. Church of the Annunciation, Crestwood 470 Westchester Avenue

The founding of what is now the Annunciation parish started with a Sears & Roebuck kit building assembled on the grounds of St. Eleanora’s Home (where St. Vladimir’s Seminary now stands) on Scarsdale Road. The Chapel was, at that time, a mission of the Immaculate Conception of Tuckahoe, with services performed by priests from that parish.. On May 10, 1931 the "Church of the Annunciation, Crestwood" was incorporated under the direction of Father Timothy Dugan, who led the parish until his death in 1957. The land where the present church stands, on the northwest corner of Westchester Avenue and St. Eleanora’s Lane, was purchased in 1932. Six months after the initial ground-breaking, the Church (now the Lower Church in the present structure) was completed by late fall of 1936. The construction of the upper Church began in 1956. The formal dedication of the completed structure by Francis Cardinal Spellman took place on May 11, 1958. For complete text/photos click here
